Mrs. Alexander Scene 11

Mrs. Alexander Scene 11

At the beginning of this scene I feel she is rather upset by the fact that Christopher went away the other day but I feel it is not in her nature to ask more in depth about why he left. She is concerned that maybe she has got Christopher in to trouble as he says “I’m not allowed to talk to you” (p.26), but she settles him by telling him that she wont tell anyone that they have been talking because in her eyes “…there is nothing wrong with having a chat. Having a chat is just being friendly, isn’t it?” (p.27). She changes the convocation because to keep him entertained but more improtantly to make him stay with her longer, talking to him about computers. Since their first meeting in the play I believe she keeps a close eye on him to make sure he is alright and to make sure that he doesn’t get into any trouble, so this is why it is odd for Christopher to hear that “I can see you sitting at your computer in your bedroom sometimes when I look across the street”.

She is highly fascinated by the fact that Christopher is doing A Level Maths a year before anyone else his age, this might be down to that maybe that she was a teacher herself (that’s how I see her). She is extremely apologetic when she gets something wrong as she does not want to upset anybody, which is very sweet of her.

Mrs. Alexander is very hesitant about saying anything to Christopher that might upset him when it comes to telling him about the affaire, but in her head I think she feels that its her duty because if he doesn’t find out now he will soon figure it out as she realizes as he is very intelligent. The way she breaks the news is in a very gentle way as she takes him to the park, which is quite and peaceful, but she doesn’t say exactly what happened because Christopher fills in the gaps for her.

After telling him what happened between his mother and Mr. Shears, Christopher almost puts up a barrier and doesn’t want to speak to anyone which is very understandable if you just hear some terriable news. He almost treats her like a stranger again, as I feel that maybe he cant trust her as she and everyone around him has been lying by keeping this a secret all this time. “I can’t be on my own with you because you are a stranger”, “I’m not a stranger Christopher, I’m just a friend” (p.30).

I feel at the end of this scene Mrs. Alexander is feeling dreadful because she never wanted to say anything that was going to upset him or put into any trouble.
