End Game-Suffering

Suffering: pain that is caused by injury, illness, loss, etc.: physical, mental, or emotional pain

 

Suffering in End game: I feel that every character in End game has not only gone through past suffering but also suffer throughout the play. For example Clov suffers physical pain in his legs because he hasn’t been able to sit down in a considerably long time.  This is a completely different pain than Nell’s. Nell’s suffering is much more of a mental pain that has lead her into a deep depression, she is suffering from the world they now live and not being able to adapt to the new way of living and has now given up hope and even with Nagg’s best attempts to cheer her up she is still constantly suffering. Hamm suffers from both Physical and emotional pain that are both linked together he’s suffers from not only being blind and being immobile he’s is also suffering from the fact that no matter how much he tells Clov that he can leave when he wants he knows that he needs him because of his disability’s and he slowly throughout the play starts to admit that he needs Clov. He has the constant reminder that he is no longer independent as a person and that seems to have sapped his hope and will power.  

I feel there is huge amounts of suffering in endgame even the world they are set in is suffering in its current state I feel that the suffering brings up many key plot points and also brings up other themes such as hope as even though there suffering through out every day and every day is the same cycle over and over again there still there and haven’t just laid down and died, their still hoping that one day something will change.
