LITERACY: traditionally and simply, the idea
that one can read and write (text). Now, technology has transformed this ( how
we read and write websites for example ), alongside the range of alternatives
to text in information and meaning making available to us.
• • If mono-modal implies a
form of communication – e.g. text/words, where representation is sequential,
then...Multi modality is what we can
create/find in e learning: image, icon, text, soundfiles, modelling software
etc, which does not need to be sequential....it can be re-framed

SOCIAL SEMIOTICS – signs in their social
environment or setting : the theory behind multi-modality, insofar as it “allows the
choosing of any modes in any combination to convey meaning
