What worked?- With our work on storytelling I found it
worked best when we told them personally like telling a friend. It worked best
like this I felt because it felt more personal like you were letting someone
into a secret which made the story more exciting.
What didn’t work?- With story telling it is hard to pin
point what didn’t work exactly as story’s are open to interpretation of the
story teller him or herself but I personally found it didn’t work when they
didn’t really know where the story was going. If a story teller knows exactly
what’s happening or even makes it up with conviction an audience will be more
involved and wanting to listen to it.
Who/what- I watched a YouTube video of Quizoola in a
devised/improvised performance. This performance consisted of two actors on
stage at a time having a chat one at a time being asked questions which were
different every time and from these rand9om questions stories were made and
told. There were many types of questions being answered but I found they asked
the more comical first then they would break a wall to the more serious
grounded questions. These stories where completely random and I don’t know if
they were made up (I presume not) but they were personal and that’s what made
the performance so engaging for me. The personal element of stories is
something we aimed to show in our performance knowing that personal stories
ground a performance and bring in the reality of it.
How- To make our story’s so they fitted to Beowulf we used
both personal and original linking them into the story of Beowulf as we went
along. Like the company Quizoola and their performance we went for the more
comical approach then grounding it with a serious ‘this is important’ story
towards the end taking the audience on a journey. We also spoke to the audience
a lot to communicate these emotions and asking them how they feel about the
situations.
Good start; do some more research on that show and company and analyse what they are doing in more depth. This will help you make more comparisons. Again, like with Jordan's post, how do we measure what is working?
