Unit 4 Evaluation- Dance

Dance: We experimented with movements with different styles of music, in an improvisation workshop. Some of the music was cultural, classical, ballroom dancing, using my own background I danced in Bollywood style because I was familiar with the songs being played which led to an idea for the Beowulf piece; the idea was to create a dance choreography which makes a specific scene abstract. In the scene Beowulf is creating an army and trains them, this is where the Bollywood dance idea happens. The Bollywood dance is training in progress. I thought it would a really interesting idea to try out; I tried the idea out because the dance was very cultural which involved a lot of movements, movements of legs, arms and body. In spite of that the idea came to my head that we should use the movements for Beowulf training army, it brought something new to the piece that is very creative and it worked successfully.
When I first showed the choreography to the class, they were really surprised with what they saw, I think because I think they have never seen anything like it so I gave them a whole new experience, the reactions I got was very enthusiastic, they were happy with it so much, they wanted to learn it. They told me specific moves they liked and wanted to add in the piece because for them it indicated Vikings and Warrior which ironically is perfect for Beowulf.

  1. Good start; resaerch how dance companies or devising companies use music. What do they have to say about it as a starting source or stimulus for creating motifs and material.
