Semiotics lecture notes.

1 - He used the song spesifically for the lyrics, he took to one part when she sings 'Me my name i call myself'.' telling us that the phrase 'me' isnt a name, it is a word that is unique to all of us.

2 - The meaning of meaning is part of language, using language as a tool to communicate with.

3 - clothing - Blacks - funeral
             - White - Purity, innocent

             - Different clothing for different interests.

- Hair - Blond - Thick - Have more fun
       - black - Gothic - Dark horse

4 - Powerful symbols - Symbols stand for the thing it represents. The alphabet are symbols but come under the set of our own language. sets of symbols are the same word but in different languages. so when the word is take out of it's set, the meaning of the word is lost.
 - The crucifix is a powerful symbol in religion.

 - The swastika - is a powerful, symbol originally the meaning for luck and good fortune.

5 - Gestures can be as simple as smiling, it can come under gestus, which was used alot in brechtian shows. Gestus is a gesture with a social status, so showing just thumbs up, automatically means that its positive, wether its meaning that your alright or it can mean your ok to carry on with a task.

6 - semiology was created by Fordinand de Saussure (1857 - 1913), he wanted to know how the language of communication started, what caused it, how it began.
semitotics was created by Charles peirce (1839 - 1914) he was a philosopher, wanting to understand signs and the meaning of meaning.

7 - Using the example that andrew provided, the signifier is a footprint in the sand and the signified is a thought of  ' im not alone' what connects this? if i was trapped on a island for a year, the i suddenly spot this foot print on the ground i would immidiently think that im not alone. This is because you are summing up all the infomation that your alone on this island, looking at the shape, the symbol, what do you see and the sound, makes you automatically think what it means.

8 - Index - suggest, the clue. for example having a football could make you think of David Beckham, its that little stepping stone towards the signified.
The icon is something that makes you think of the signified for example, someone who looks like David Beckham, makes you think of him. It's the looking at something, if it was taken out of context would make the object random, but having that picture interpretation in your head that links the signifier to the signified.
