Themes and Motifs

Cosmology: Christophers world is incredibly small at the beginning of the play. It appears as if it consists entirely of his home, his school and the occasional trip to the garden centre. However, his small world begins a sea change after the dog Wellington is killed.

Wellington is a black poodle dog, and this makes me think of black holes, which is what create the swirling effect of stars and also expands Christophers world.

Books: This includes Christopher's book, his notebook and also Sherlock Holmes stories, in particular The Silver Blaze . This includes the title:

Gregory (Scotland Yard detective): "Is there any other point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
Holmes: "To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time."
Gregory: "The dog did nothing in the night-time."
Holmes: "That was the curious incident."

Disability: Although this book and play is often touted as a "Aspergers/Autism novel" these words are never actually mentioned in the story. This was purpousful on the part of Mark Haddon
I think in particular my character, Judy, has a form of (in the loosest sense of the word) social disability, as she simply does not cope with the demands made upon her of having a child with social disabilities. In a sense heart inability to cope is a form that many of us might recognise.

I myself sympathised with Judy, but I do not believe this excused her behaviour. In since this cannot be said of Christopher seeing as he has no ability to reflect upon his actions. How however I do think that he perhaps has more ability than is let on at the beginning. He is able to choose whether he's going to obey commands, especially those made by teachers and his father Ed.

An Odyssey:  Many books consist of " coming-of-age"  stories. In literary critisism this is called an Bildungsroman, or 'Novel of Formation'. Christophers story is no different .

He begins as of much of a child in fact almost a baby. He has to grow quickly session when he finds out that his mother chose to do very adult thing i.e. having affair.  also his father chose to  keep his letters secret. Previous to this, perhaps, Christopher did not believe his father would  do any thing wrong. It's a crushing blow to find out that his father has kept this momentous event from him. He starts from his house he then proceeds to Swindon town. Then he finds his way to several train stations including London, and even going as far as his mother's house. He succeeded his A-level even achieving A* grade s.
